The human body is made up of trillions of cells; most of which are susceptible to bacterial infection. This collection was inspired by the micrographs taken to study bacteria such as Bacillus Anthracis, Haemophilus, Mycobacterium Leprae, Salmonella Typhi and Mycobacterium Marinum. These micrographs use various types of gram staining that result in pink, red and purple colours to help identify the bacteria.
The distortive results that the bacteria has on the body was translated into textile experiments using felt, pipe cleaners and cotton wool. Each garment was inspired by respective diseases and a large tapestry (175x125cm) was hand stitched to compliment the collection. The designs did not feature arm holes; symbolising the affliction that comes with the grip of these diseases on their host.
Tia was awarded the Academic and Innovation awards for this collection.
